Keep Yer Crew Connected with Wine Chats
A little over a year ago, The Starr Conspiracy gathered a fearsome band of intellectual swashbucklers for what we called Wine Chats, where every month we — you guessed it — drink wine and chat about the biggest ideas on our minds. Nothing’s off limits: everything from work tech and philosophy to the latest controversy in the news.

Since we’ve all been working from our own pirate ships, we brought it online and really enjoyed how it turned out. We’ve found that connecting with coworkers outside of work is crucial to our wellbeing, so we’d like to share the booty.
Here are a few tips to getting your own virtual Wine Chats off the ground:
Step One
Step Two
Step Three
Pick a topic that will get people’s brains working. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Utilitarianism
- Engagement vs. wellbeing
- Income inequality
- Arrested Development
- Mars colonization
- Stakeholder capitalism
Open the invite to everyone around you, but know that not everyone enjoys debating the finer points of utilitarianism or the latest hot-button issue covered in The New York Times. Include a couple questions on the topic to prime everyone’s noggins.
Don’t forget the Zoom link (or video conferencing tool of your choice).
Start with a few minutes of chit-chat, then welcome everyone with context for why you’re there — and pose an open-ended question that presents the complexity of the issue at hand.
Sit back with a glass of 2009 Côtes du Rhône, cross your legs, and let the conversation unfold as it wants to, lightly stirring as necessary.
We whipped up some sea-worthy backgrounds to give your captain’s quarters that extra special touch.
